The first pony class car was introduced by Ford Motor Company and named the Mustang. It was produced in the year 1964. It was a 2+2 seat coupe with the FR layout. There are five generations for this car.

First generation car was a two seat mid engine roadster, which was later upgraded to4 seat. It chassis and suspensions were derived from Ford Falcon and Fairlane.

The second generation model was called Mustang II which was smaller than 1973 cars. This was a small compact car which competed with coupes of Japan like Toyota Celica and European Ford Capri.

In the third generation model the interior was restyled to accommodate four people easily, but it had a small rear seat. In order to provide better service access it used a larger trunk and a larger motor bay. Trim levels offered by the car included LX, GT.

The fourth generation model went through a redesign in 1994. The design was named SN95. This car had some stylish elements which were similar to earlier mustangs. The best came with a 3.8 liter V6 engine with a horse power of 145.

A complete redesigned fifth generation model for 2005 was introduced in The North American International Auto Show and it was called S197 and it was based on the D2C platform.
